02 · Our story
How Helena’s
came to be.
The name on the door is Helena’s. The story behind it belongs to the family.
Faith and family were part of how they found their way through those years. They remain part of the salon’s story.
The beginnings
A craft carried forward.
In Greece, Helena styled hair wherever she could—in kitchens, courtyards, and borrowed corners of apartments. Her young son, Fanar, often played nearby.
Her family had left Iraq during a time of growing unrest. Greece was one stop on a journey that would eventually bring them to America. Along the way, hairdressing was something Helena could carry with her: a skill she knew and a way to connect with people.
Building the salon
The family helped make it happen.
In America, Helena started without an established clientele. One guest at a time, she built relationships and continued her work. With encouragement from her father, the idea of opening a salon began to take shape.
The family painted walls, installed fixtures, and worked together to prepare the space. In 2005, Helena’s Hair Salon opened its doors.
Today
Carrying it forward, together.
Today, Helena and Fanar continue that work in Royal Oak. For Fanar, the salon’s history is also his own: the mother he watched working, the grandfather who encouraged her, and the place his family helped build.
